Frequently Asked Questions

Can a student in Koinonia@Home graduate with an Alberta Accredited Diploma?

Yes. In Alberta, 2 possible program choices for @Home students that can lead to an accredited Alberta High School Diploma. We can design a personalized learning plan in either a Shared Responsibility or a Teacher-Directed @Home program.

Can a Koinonia@Home student also attend a Koinonia campus program?

Yes! We can help you design a program where a portion of the program is attendance at a campus school and/or a teacher-directed program at home. You can “blend” a Home Education parent-directed program with a campus teacher-directed component, an @Home teacher-directed component or both.

Can I use my own curriculum?

Yes! If students are registered in a Home Education parent-directed program, the parents can choose curriculum. If students are registered in a Shared Responsibility or Teacher Directed program, the primary resources and assignments used to demonstrate learning are designed by the teacher with input from parents. Teachers are responsible for ensuring that the Alberta Program of Studies requirements are fulfilled and part of this responsibility is ensuring that resources used support the learning outcomes. Many parents choose to add secondary resources to the program to supplement learning. For example, parents may choose to add Math-U-See activities and learning to a teacher-directed math program to strengthen their child’s math development.

Does Koinonia@Home offer classes for homeschooling students?

We offer a variety of learning activities in the community. It is possible that some of these activities may be integrated by a Koinonia@Home teacher as part of a teacher-directed course’s design in a Koinonia@Home program. If you are enrolled in a teacher-directed course in another program, our activities and events may enrich your learning program requirements.

Can I attend Koinonia@Home events and activities if I am not a Koinonia student?

Yes! We’d love to have you. Many of our events and activities are open to students from other school authorities. Sometimes, we just like to gather as a Koinonia family to celebrate our own community. When we open registration for our events and activities, we will give first priority to Koinonia students for early registration and keep a waiting list for students interested in joining us. They may be, at times, a cost differential for students from other school authorities as well.
