A History of Parental Choice
Since 1981, Koinonia has existed to fulfill the vision of fellowship between parents, teachers and students in a learning community. Offering @Home choices to parents honors this tradition of parental choice. We invite you to read Celebrating 30 Years of Koinonia for a look at our history and our roots.
Key Values
In 1981, the key values of Koinonia culture are community and accountability. We are accountable to Christ first, then, to families, to students to excellence in academics and to our government authorities.
Devoted to Christ
We are a Christ-centered homeschool community with a strong Statement of Faith. Teachers in our program are primarily focused on supporting Christ-centered educational experience for each student and family.
Dedicated to Students and Families
Academics are important at Koinonia. We emphasize personal academic excellence by supporting the development of each child's unique gifts, talents, abilities and interests. Offering choices to families is a key component of our mission.
Our Teachers
We have a gifted staff with a common vision. Our Program Directors and many of our teachers are seasoned Home Educators and/or have supported families for many years in home-based educational programs. We support new staff with coaching and mentorship through the Program Director model.
Activities and Events
Community fellowship is central to our vision and values. It's right in our name! See our events page for descriptions of our growing list of activities, trips, excursions, Discovery Days, parent support sessions and opportunities for students to play sports. In addition to our home-based program activities, we have 7 Koinonia campus schools in the Koinonia family that also offer a variety of activities.
Digital Citizenship and Learning Commons
Our Learning Management System (LMS), Schoology, is the #1 voted LMS globally. We are excited to offer this choice to our @Home learners and to parents who would like their own digital space! We haven't left print behind, we've just added a choice for families who are seeking a digital experience as part of their @Home learning.
Career and Post-Secondary Counselling
We offer quality career and post-secondary counselling and are involved with Dual-Credit provincial initiatives. Our home-based learners are supported by staff with experience creating community-based learning experiences for students.
Summer Opportunities
We are developing a summer program for 2017 and look forward to growing this choice for families.
High School Choices
We offer a variety of ways for a student to complete their high school experience, including a fully-accredited high school Alberta diploma option. Koinonia@Home students can participate in our high school graduation ceremonies and are invited to participate in high school events and trips.
Parent Input
We are a new program with experienced staff. As we grow and develop, we value parental input into our program development and are committed to a program that develops in response to the needs of our community! We have a growing Facebook group of parents and staff and seek your input on our website. We are here to serve your family!
